Friends of the Finney County Public Library
Upcoming Friends events:
The Friends held their annual "Premium" book sale May 31 through June 9 in the meeting rooms of the Library. Thirty to thirty-five volunteers participated in the setup, staffing and take-down of the book sale including several members of the Library teen group who helped with the setup of the sale on May 30. Prices for the Book Store materials were reduced to equal the Book Sale prices. Proceeds from the sale totaled $3,454.18. It is estimated that the number of books sold was somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000.
In May, the Friends were presented a $500 check from the Garden City Noon Lions Club to partner in the purchase of additional Large Print and Audio Books for the Library. The Friends will formally vote to match the Lions donation at their quarterly meeting in August. This will be the 4th year that the Noon Lions Club and the Friends have collaborated on the acquisition of these materials.

Western State Bank of Garden City has accepted a challenge from the Friends of the Finney County Public Library to help fund the library's Nature Explore Classroom. Each organization will contribute $5,000 making a combined grant to the project of $10,000.
The Finney County Public Library's Nature Explore project is a 10,000-square-foot outdoor classroom designed in cooperation with the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation to encourage outdoor activity, nature appreciation and early childhood developmental growth.
It will include areas for music, building blocks, water play, climbing, art, gathering, large motor play, digging and planting. The classroom is being built through private donations and grants and will be open, free to the public as soon as all the necessary funds are raised.
"Western State Bank is very excited to partner with the Friends of the Library on this project," President Jeff Whitham said in a press release. "The Nature Explore Classroom at the Library will serve children, families and the community very well. Western State Bank wants to help make sure it gets built and put to use as soon as possible."
"We can think of no better use of our funds than to join with Western State Bank in support of such a worthy endeavor," said Rocky Cook, Friends Treasurer. The source of funds donated by the Friends comes from the sale of thousands of books each year through big book sales and the Book Store located inside the Library.
